25/11/2019: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The Minister of Equal Opportunities Spaziani: Femicide is a crime against humanity
Minister Spaziani reminded today the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:
“November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This anniversary was established on 17 December 1999 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, through resolution number 54/134.
The world today celebrates this activity in support of women, increasingly victims of violence, harassment, stalking and aggression at home and the Templar Nation adheres with conviction to this anniversary.
November 25 is not a random date: that day in fact, in the year 1960, the Mirabal sisters, political activists from the Dominican Republic, who opposed the dictatorial regime of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, were killed.
That day, the three Mirabal sisters went to the jail to visit their husbands, when they were stranded on the road by officers of the Military Information Service who took them to a hidden place.
Here they were tortured, raped, massacred with sticks and strangled in their car.
The Mirabal sisters are also known by the name “Mariposas”, as similar to butterflies in search of freedom.
Surely, in the Western world, women’s rights are almost equal to those of men, even though women do not always have the right respect in the home.
In most other countries, however, women are still regarded as little more than an object.
So, women have won many rights, but we cannot let our guard down because there is still a lot to do”.
